The IDOL

What is the consensus among critics who have seen the first two episodes of the series, which will be available on HBO Max on June 4? Up until this point, the show has appeared on Bad Tomatoes with a score of 17%, and surveys from pundits are blended however generally incredulous, with acclaim for the exhibitions and less so for the composition. At Assortment, Peter Debruge states "the script...seems determined to trick crowds into believing they're seeing the way in which Hollywood works, when such a great deal it adds up to tasteless platitudes lifted from Sidney Sheldon books and softcore pornography. At the very least, Showgirls was a thinly disguised remake of All About Eve, whereas The Idol plays like a sinister male fantasy.

Debruge adds, "The more [Tesfaye's Tedros] arises as an effect on Jocelyn in the episodes ahead, the less room there is for The Symbol to imagine that it's commending this endangered vocalist's independence — as a craftsman or as a lady. ' Tedros tells her that pop music is like the ultimate Trojan horse, and that the same could be said of zeitgeist-altering television shows: They could serve as a vehicle for subversive social criticism. Inconvenience is, Levinson's perspective appears to be bad. Jocelyn shouldn't have to suffer in order to become stronger. As both Depp's character and the show appear to be enslaved by The Weeknd, audiences of Euphoria won't be surprised by his shameful treatment of her. Damon Wise writes at Deadline: "Until we know more, it’s hard to make value judgments about morality and ethics, or, more substantively, the arguments about the male gaze and female body rights that are coming in the water like a stealth torpedo." However, as it turns out, Depp is quite rivetingly game with, to put it mildly, a highly sexualized performance that is also grounded and frequently vulnerable. He awkwardly addresses the lines between porn and art, power and exploitation, which young women in the music industry have had to navigate for years.

Chief Sam Levinson safeguarded the provocative idea of the show, recognizing its expectation to push limits yet recommending that it might have gone excessively far. Levinson made mention of the sexualized society we live in as well as the impact that pornography and the internet have had on contemporary society.

The IDOL

The experiences of pop stars like Britney Spears in the 1990s serve as inspiration for the themes of toxic fame that are the focus of "The Idol." Some critics characterized the series as a "sordid male fantasy" and criticized its depiction of female sexuality, while others gave it mixed reviews. Notwithstanding, others recognized the potential for a progressive depiction of female sexuality while advised against making rushed decisions.
